In this evolving era, young leaders must be equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with practical skills, awareness, and real-world problem-solving experience. United Planet’s Youth2Youth (Y2Y) Program was designed with this vision in mind, creating a dynamic learning environment where participants collaborate across borders to develop actionable solutions for real world organizations.
The Youth2Youth Program, supported by the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative (JCSVEI), a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs administered by the Aspen Institute. Through this partnership, the program expands opportunities for youth in the United States, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Syria to engage in meaningful exchange while developing skills to become future leaders.
The most recent Youth2Youth cohort demonstrated how virtual exchange programs can foster innovation, and global leadership while producing measurable impact for both participants and partner organizations.
The primary goal of the Youth2Youth Program is to provide youth with experiential learning opportunities that bridge theory and practice. The program immerses global participants in real-world challenges faced by emerging startups. Students work virtually and collaboratively to identify problems, analyze root causes, and design business-oriented solutions that organizations can realistically implement.
Through this process, participants gain hands-on experiences in entrepreneurship, design thinking, teamwork, financial literacy, and professional communication. At the same time, our partnering startups benefit from fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and strategic recommendations developed by different teams.
The program also strengthens understanding by bringing together participants from different backgrounds and locations. By collaborating with peers from varied backgrounds, participants learn to navigate building, and developing the competencies increasingly required in today’s workforce. This mission aligns closely with the goals of the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange Initiative, which promotes people-to-people connections and mutual understanding through virtual exchange.
The most recent Youth2Youth cohort was delivered through an intensive eight-week virtual exchange model that included recruitment, onboarding, and full program implementation. A total of 91 students from the United States, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Syria participated in a structured learning journey supported by mentors, faculty members, and startup partners.
The program combined multiple learning components designed to maximize engagement and practical outcomes, including:
A central feature of the program was the emphasis on transforming ideas into executable solutions. Participants were guided step-by-step, from problem identification to solution design and implementation planning, ensuring that their final outputs were both innovative and practical.
One of the defining strengths of the Youth2Youth Program is its emphasis on collaboration. Participants worked in varied teams spanning multiple countries and time zones, learning how to communicate effectively despite differences in language, context, and lived experiences.
For many participants, this collaboration provided exposure to perspectives they had never previously encountered. This program deepened discussions around resilience, community impact, and responsible leadership. These interactions fostered and strengthened participants’ ability to work in international environments; an increasingly essential skill in today’s economy.
One participant shared, “The Y2Y Program was the first class where I learned about investing and partnering organizations. Each week, it was a joy seeing people from all over the world and exchanging ideas.”
Another student noted, “My experience in the Y2Y Program was very positive. I learned new skills, met supportive people, and gained more confidence in myself. The program helped me grow personally and think more clearly about my future.”
The collaborative nature of the program also encouraged teams to intentionally ensure that every member contributed to discussions and presentations, reinforcing shared ownership of outcomes and strengthening teamwork skills.

During the latest cohort, participants partnered with five startups based in the US, Iraq, and Syria, to address real operational and strategic challenges. Through research, mentorship, and iterative feedback, teams developed solution proposals supported by polished pitch presentations.
Each team conducted research, analyzed operational needs, and developed tailored recommendations for its assigned organization. Projects included creating a 90-day grant readiness plan, conducting SWOT analyses, recommending strategic partnerships, strengthening organizational communications, and identifying opportunities to improve operational effectiveness.
The final presentations marked a highlight of the program. Participants showcased well-developed solutions that reflected weeks of collaboration, mentorship, and refinement. Their recommendations addressed organizational needs ranging from internal operations and communications to strategic partnerships and community engagement.
Organizational partners expressed strong enthusiasm for the ideas presented and affirmed their intention to implement several of the proposed recommendations to support organizational growth and increase their community development. This outcome reflects one of the program’s greatest achievements: participants not only learned concepts but produced tangible results capable of driving real organizational change.
Since its launch in 2024, the Youth2Youth Program has spanned three cohorts and engaged over 210 student participants from the United States, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Syria in working on real challenges faced by real world organizations Working in international teams, participants worked with five startups in the United States, Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Syria to address real operational and strategic challenges, developing practical solutions designed to create meaningful change.
The Y2Y Program achieved several significant outcomes. Participants moved through a structured process of problem identification, research, analysis, solution development, and implementation planning, supported by mentors, faculty members, and partner organizations. Through this experience, they transformed ideas into actionable recommendations designed to address genuine organizational needs.
The program’s outcomes showed that virtual exchange can be a powerful model for youth development. Participants strengthened their communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while gaining practical experience that improved their career readiness and confidence in professional settings. Partnering Startups received actionable recommendations aligned with their operational needs, and participants built lasting professional networks and friendships that extend well beyond the program.
Participants completed projects that strengthened their abilities in strategic thinking, business analysis, entrepreneurship, project management, professional communication, presentation design, teamwork, research, and leadership.
The impact of the program extended well beyond the final presentations. Several alumni shared that the experience strengthened their applications for master’s degree programs, while others secured paid employment by demonstrating the analytical, communication, and project management skills they developed through Y2Y. One former participant later became a team leader in Soliya’s facilitation and leadership program, building on the leadership experience gained during Y2Y.
Many participants reported increased confidence in presenting ideas, collaborating internationally, and applying structured problem-solving approaches. Mentors and faculty also observed significant growth in participants’ ability to translate ideas into realistic business strategies.
Beyond immediate learning outcomes, these outcomes demonstrate how experiential learning can prepare participants for continued academic achievement, professional opportunities, and leadership roles.
The latest Youth2Youth Program cohort reinforced several key insights that will help shape future program development:
Building on these lessons, United Planet will continue to expand its mentor network, enhance participant onboarding, and develop new partnerships with mission driven organizations. These efforts will enable the program to reach more young leaders while deepening its impact across communities around the world.
The Youth2Youth Program highlights the transformative potential of virtual exchange as a tool for youth development and international collaboration. By connecting young leaders across borders and empowering them to solve real-world challenges together, the program cultivates practical skills that extend far beyond the virtual classroom.
The program also demonstrates how international educational partnerships can strengthen mutual understanding while preparing young people for leadership in an interconnected world.
As organizations increasingly seek innovative solutions to complex challenges, programs like Youth2Youth demonstrate that empowering youth with practical experience, mentorship, and exchange creates lasting benefits for individuals, communities, and organizations alike.
Through experiential learning, meaningful partnerships, and actionable outcomes, the Youth2Youth Program continues to prepare the next generation of leaders proving that collaboration across cultures is not only possible, but powerful.
