Understanding the Security Situation for United Planet Travelers

United Planet monitors international policies and visa requirements for our travelers and is committed to keeping our volunteers informed. This page provides clarity on travel policies, visa requirements, and traveler rights to ensure a smooth journey abroad and a safe return to the US.

Reentering the United States

As a US citizen, your entry into the United States is guaranteed under the law, and no visa is required. However, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers may ask questions upon arrival. You have the right to decline answering intrusive questions, but doing so may result in delays or further inspection.

For more details on travelers’ rights at the airport, see this resource from the American Civil Liberties Union – ACLU: Know Your Rights at the Airport.

Travel Warnings & Changes in Visa Policies

While the US remains open to its citizens, visa requirements in other countries may change in response to evolving policies. United Planet and our host organizations will monitor these changes closely.

Traveling as a Non-Citizen

International visitors entering the United States must be aware of visa requirements and border screening procedures. The US operates under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for travelers from 43 countries, requiring an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) for entry. However, holding a valid visa or ESTA does not guarantee entry—CBP officers have final discretion.

Possible Entry Issues for International Travelers

  • Recent Travel History: Visitors who have traveled to certain restricted countries,  after January 12, 2021, may be denied an ESTA and require a visa.
  • Visa Overstay Concerns: Consular officials may question whether a traveler intends to overstay their visa, affecting approval.
  • Increased Detentions & Deportations: Recent reports indicate that some international travelers have faced detention or deportation upon attempting entry.

Know Your Rights at the Border

Regardless of citizenship, all travelers should be aware of their rights when entering or leaving the US:

  • Customs officers can search luggage and electronic devices (laptops, phones) without suspicion.
  • US citizens cannot be denied entry but may experience delays for declining to answer intrusive questions.
  • Legal permanent residents (Green Card holders) cannot be denied entry but may face questioning.
  • Non-citizens may be denied entry for refusing to answer questions.
  • Visitors using the Visa Waiver Program waive their right to contest deportation.
  • If detained, individuals may not be entitled to a lawyer under US law.

Additional Travel Considerations

  • Religious and Political Questioning: You do not have to answer questions about your religious or political beliefs. If pressed, you can request to speak with a supervisor.
  • Electronic Device Searches: While US citizens cannot be denied entry for refusing to unlock their devices, border officers may confiscate them for further inspection.
  • Strip Searches: These are not routine and must be supported by reasonable suspicion, conducted in private.
  • Traveling with Children: Children under 13 may keep shoes and jackets on during screening but are not exempt from pat-downs.
