Project Description

Based on the principals of non-formal education, the aim of this project is to support the development of active citizenship, participation in the community on the basis of common responsibility and solidarity. The objective is to encourage participants to be aware of societal challenges (local to global) and to create relationships between them and their communities.

Training on conflict resolution and theater/performance will be held. The activities surrounding these points will offer the opportunity to know a wide range of social commitment and civil society initiatives and organizations in Germany.

Parent Organization in Germany

As a volunteer in Germany, you will be hosted by ICJA, ICYE’s German partner organization. ICJA began as a reconciliation effort after World War II and has continued as a way to foster volunteerism and public service. ICJA sends more than 300 German volunteers abroad every year, and they welcome 70 6-12 month volunteers each year.

Accommodations

The program mainly takes place in Blomberg and will end in Dortmund. Basic facilities which include beds, a kitchen, and a meeting room are offered.

Blomberg has about 16.000 inhabitants and is situated in the eastern part of North Rhine Westphalia, a region which is characterized by farms, hills (up to 500 meters)and plenty of forests. Blomberg has a beautiful old town area with half-timbered houses and old alleyways. The old town is also home to a historical castle which now is established as a hotel.

The group will shop and cook together creating menus and meals alongside the in-country coordinators who introduce the volunteers to many local dishes. Vouchers for meals are provided at various times when necessary.

Daily Schedule

6 hours of work (and workshops) per day with lunch and breaks on-site and weekends as leisure time. Volunteers are expected to participate in group-based leisure activities held as part of the program.
