Volunteer in Indonesia

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago state, made up of an astounding 17,508 islands in Southeast Asia. Securing its independence after World War II, Indonesia has continued in its important role as a trade region, which dates back to the seventh century. Since declaring independence, Indonesia has been turbulent, with challenges posed by natural disasters, corruption, separatism, a democratization process, and periods of rapid economic change. Two monsoon seasons (rainy and dry) determine Indonesia’s climate for the year, with predominately warm temperatures except in the mountains. Hot springs, exotic animals, and beautiful rock formations leave little for volunteers to want in this magnificent country.

Volunteer Opportunities in Indonesia

Bali Schools

teach in collaboration with the Jembrana Educational Department, mainly focusing on English based learning but, some cultural exchange as well.

Boarding Schools

teach at an Islamic School and motivate the students about their professional and personal futures.

Madrasah (Schools)

choose to participate in either elementary, junior-high, or senior-high schools that focus on formal subjects, as well as, religion, vocation, and personal development.

Kindergarten:

serve children from the local community and provide educational support for low-income families.

University Education:

motivate university students to pursue intercultural learning by lecturing in the classroom and holding various workshops and activities outside.

Rural Primary Education:

provide fundamental education to youth through teaching and social activities.

Rural High School Education:

coordinate intercultural activities through games, presentations, and discussions to enrich students while helping to develop English skills.

Urban Primary Education

teach in elementary schools for children (ages 6-12). Assist with classes, as well as extra-curricular activities.

Urban High School Education

teach in elementary schools for children (ages 15-17). Assist with rigorous classes, as well as sports and extra-curricular activities.

Japanese Language and Culture

assist local teachers in arranging classes for high school students.

French Language and Culture

assist with French lectures in local high schools and universities to stimulate intercultural learning.

Mandarin Language and Culture

teach the language and customs to elementary students and beyond, as this practice is integrated into all schools within Indonesia.

Urban Children Development

assist with administration in a care center for children (ages 0-7) who are in their beginning stages of learning.

Rural Children Development

assist with administration at a local care center for children (ages 0-7) by growing their cognitive, motor, and social skills.

Children’s Center

assist with administration at a local center dedicated to pray, play, learning, and laughing alongside children who need support and supervision daily.

Public Health

help disadvantaged people, especially those pregnant and the elderly, within the villages have access to health care and accurate information.

Cultural Exchange

assist the staff who coordinate cultural exchange from Indonesia. Provide administrative, programmatic, and awareness support.

Discover

Indonesia is the second most biodiverse nation in the world. Within this distinction, many of the species are endemic to the islands too! However, there are major urban centers like Jakarta, the largest city and capital of Indonesia.

Learn

The Sangiran Early Man Site is located in Central Java, Indonesia; famous for the discovery of Homo erectus artifacts in the 1930s. But, even being one of the oldest civilizations doesn’t allow for pure authenticity. Indonesia draws from many indigenous and international cultures and, within it Jakarta is truly an international city with many cultures and subgroups.

Challenge

Investigate the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra which comprises three national parks: Gunung Leuser National Park, Kerinci Seblat National Park and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. The parks proudly conserve many species including countless endangered.

Transportation and Flights

Due to varying airline prices, United Planet does not arrange or cover the cost of flights to and from Indonesia. However, we arrange all ground transportation to and from the airport in Indonesia and will ensure that you arrive safely at orientation. Volunteers should arrive on Mondays between before 9 pm but, cannot arrive during Ramadan.

About Our Quest Fee

We want you to succeed. That means having in place the support our volunteers need. We don’t just drop you in country and hope for the best. We provide training before you leave … language exposure … 24/7 in-country support … support for your host family … accommodations, meals and airport transportation … activities and excursions. The whole idea is to make the experience successful and productive for you and the host community, and we have found that these things are crucial. Remember that we are a non-profit, mission-driven organization – we wouldn’t spend money on something that wasn’t important.

*Payment Plan Details: A $300 deposit is due at the time of your enrollment to lock in your spot in our program. After your confirmation in a program, you can choose to pay the Quest Fee all at once or in installments. The total Quest Fee is due 4 weeks before your departure date.
