Volunteer in Denmark

Seafaring, Vikings, castles, and quaint harbors beckon volunteers to Denmark’s chilly shores. Denmark is a small but mighty Nordic nation in Scandinavia, surrounded by the Baltic Sea to the east and the North Sea to the west. The Kingdom of Denmark includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands. It has the longest continuous coastline in Europe, with no location further than 52 km from the ocean. In the Middle Ages, Denmark was an agricultural, Christian kingdom, but after the Reformation and 300 years of losing territory, Denmark ultimately adopted a democratic constitution in 1849. Now, hard work, the protection of civil liberties and traditional family life dominate Denmark’s lifestyle.

United Planet is the US and Canadian member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Denmark, you will be hosted by Dansk ICYE, ICYE’s partner organization there. Dansk ICYE provides a multitude of opportunities for United Planet volunteers to create lasting friendships and make a difference in this beautiful country.

Special Volunteer Award – Taylor Paraboschi

We are so proud of volunteers like Taylor who do their part to create a global community, one relationship at a time. Taylor volunteered for one year in a small primary school in Amager, Denmark. During the day, she would help out in English classes for grades three to nine, assisting teachers with lessons and helping out with the needs of the classroom. In the afternoons, Taylor would take the younger children on field trips and conduct other activities as part of an after-school program.

Taylor would like to recognize her host family, the Frødings, from her host community. Taylor says, “They treated me like part of their family, getting to know me and letting me truly get to know them; they were overwhelmingly generous with their time and energy, going out of their way to introduce me to traditional Danish customs and to have me experience parts of Denmark I wouldn’t normally have seen. Being a host family isn’t easy but through kindness, understanding, and a healthy dose of Danish humor, the Frødings truly made Denmark feel like my second home.”

Taylor remembers her experience: “United Planet was a phenomenal experience that I will always be thankful for and it introduced me to people, places, and a culture that I will always cherish.”

Project Information

Children

Volunteers can assist in youth centers, working with children from ages 12-17. Entertain the children with fun, playful activities and do some practical work such as, tutoring. Volunteers may interact with children through after-school sports, as well.

Education

Volunteers may assist teachers in English, Spanish or French lessons; computer classes; and, other various skills based courses. Volunteers serve as conversation partners and tutors for the students, among other roles. While volunteering they are simultaneously learning about the Danish education system.

The top of the tower provides a breathtaking view of Copenhagen. If you are visiting during the winter months, then you’ll be able to gaze at the stars from Europe’s oldest functioning observatory.

Master the art of Danish Hygge

Hygge, pronounced HYU-gah, is a concept that loosely translates to a sense of “coziness” and “togetherness”, particularly when enjoying time with friends or family. Maybe the idea of hygge explains why the Danes are considered the happiest people in the world?

United Planet Quests are designed to be immersive, authentic, comprehensive and provide you everything you’ll need to succeed. The program elements allow you to engage fully with a new culture, forge strong relationships, and challenge yourself. Most importantly, we partner with the community to ensure your experience will be important, relevant and helpful to the community you serve.

Extensive pre-departure preparation, including a training weekend in New Hampshire with United Planet staff or online
Food and lodging in your host country
Airport transfers
Emergency medical insurance
In-country orientation upon arrival and ongoing support and supervision throughout your Quest
Language training
Mid-year camp (for 1 year volunteers) and final camp
Monthly stipend for incidental expenses

18 – 30 years old
Citizen or resident of the United States or Canada

Start Dates and Travel

Volunteers are responsible for booking and covering the cost of their own flights (including pre-departure training).
Volunteers will obtain the necessary visas with support from our Long-Term staff to volunteer in their host country.

About Our Quest Fee

We want you to succeed. That means having in place the support our volunteers need. We don’t just drop you in country and hope for the best. We provide training before you leave … language exposure … 24/7 in-country support … support for your host family … accommodations, meals and airport transportation … activities and excursions. The whole idea is to make the experience successful and productive for you and the host community, and we have found that these things are crucial. Remember that we are a non-profit, mission-driven organization – we wouldn’t spend money on something that wasn’t important.
