The call for older volunteers rings out at AARP convention

October 4, 2010United Planet

It was standing-room-only in the convention hall in Orlando, where United Planet Executive Director Dave Santulli was encouraging over 500 retirees to pick up and go overseas to volunteer. On Saturday, October 2, he urged those attending, aged 50 and up, to “just go” — for many reasons.

Santulli cited the benefits to the local community where the volunteer lives and works — especially the older volunteer. Other cultures are ready to tap into the wisdom and experience that retired people bring, and to welcome them into their homes.

But volunteering also brings great benefits to the person volunteering. He went on to say: “The benefits to volunteers are startling. In fact, volunteering is kind of like a magic potion. Studies show that volunteering gives you a renewed sense of purpose and direction, creates stronger social connections, makes you happier and healthier – not just mentally, but physically.  In fact, one study shows a longer life expectancy associated with volunteering than even exercising or attending regular religious service.”

Audience members asked questions after the panel concluded, and AARP encouraged them to participate.

Dave also enjoyed a concert featuring Judy Collins, Crosy Stills and Nash, and Richie Havens! Not a bad weekend, all in all…

The largest organization in the country for people 50 and up, AARP attracted roughly 30,000 people to its convention September 30 – October 2, 2010.
