When United Planet VP Theresa Higgs was in Nepal recently, she dropped by the orphanage in Kathmandu where Sarah, a United Planet Long-term volunteer, is working with children. Sarah had sent in a video of her kids singing, and won a gift of $100 from United Planet for her project.
Sarah invested the money in carpeting for the library — so simple, right? Yet so effective: the kids are now more inclined to sit and read! She sent a message to United Planet, and everyone who supports our country funds…
Nepalese schoolchildren are more willing to sit and read on their nice new carpet.
“Just wanted to write at let you know that 7000 rupees has now been spent and made a big difference in the library!
It funded the carpet and plastic sheets to go under it and not only makes it look a lot better, but makes it a million times more useful because the students can come in and choose a book and sit wherever they want instead of only having a few spots on the one bench to fight over. It’s great!

Lots of students are now coming every day at lunch. I attached a couple photos. The first one was before the carpet went in and then the next two are with the carpet. There’s still more work to be done on the room by getting more books and decorating the walls better, but the carpet was a huge step, so thank you very much!”
