A few weeks ago, we posted a graphic that highlighted the top ten tips for volunteering abroad, after compiling advice from our United Planet Quest alumni. We’re back this week to elaborate on the eighth tip. If you are thinking about participating in a United Planet Quest or are about to embark on your volunteer experience, read on!
Your health is extremely important when you are volunteering abroad – you can do your best, most engaging work when you are feeling in top shape. That’s why United Planet volunteers recommend that you bring a small first aid kit with you when you volunteer abroad. Many volunteer sites are not the most forgiving of environments – so you’ll be glad you came prepared to handle small scrapes and bruises, and any other minor health issues that arise.
Healthcare needs differ for everyone, but a list of small essential items to pack in your first aid kit include:
Ibuprofen or Tylenol are good to have on hand for small ailments such as headaches or muscle soreness. Likewise, you will be glad you packed antihistamines if you discover you are allergic to something in your host country. Even if you are not sensitive to any environmental allergens at home, your host country is likely to host a variety of plants and animals that you have never been exposed to in the United States. You will enjoy your volunteer trip a lot more if you are not stuffed up and sniffling the whole time you are there!
Remember that everyday items you take for granted in the United States might not be readily available at your project location or lodging. Think about what small first aid items or toiletries you use often and consider putting these in your kit as well. Examples include tweezers, nail-clippers, Q-tips, and tissues. If you are traveling on a long-term Quest, you may want to consider stocking your first aid kit a little more thoroughly, with items such as cough drops, extra bandages, or cold medicine.
Of course, carefully pack any personal medications you will need to take while abroad as well, and bring a little more than you expect to need, just in case. If you are checking your luggage, make sure to carry your personal medications on the plane in case your bags get delayed or lost.
In the end, pack items that are small but useful. If a health concern arises that is more than you can handle alone, your on-site coordinators will ensure that you receive the proper care. However, it is always good to be prepared for whatever minor injuries you may encounter while abroad – and you may even end up helping out someone else who didn’t pack as thoroughly as you!
