The “How To” series will discuss important topics related to volunteering abroad and traveling in general. As you read on, the following will give you advice on “how to” do something. Sounds simple enough, but a lot of these tips & tricks will make a world of difference once you’re out there traveling abroad. We know this because we’ve been there, and we’ll be sharing personal notes along with best-practice advice from world travelers!
While it may not be the first thing you think of as you are packing your bags, the most essential item you should be carrying is a healthy immune system. We all know that public transportation, be it bus, plane or train, is seemingly a cesspool for viruses. While purell is always a good thing to have on hand, there are a number of other precautions you can take to maintain your well-being abroad.
I promise this isn’t going to turn into a lecture, but we can all agree a little self control and perseverance are good things. Incorporate these habits into your meals and exercise routine. Not only will you feel healthier and more fit, your soul will feel lighter! If you don’t believe me, follow major fitness and food bloggers and their social media handles to see what they have to say. Their stories and pictures will get you inspired in no time!
While I’m no RN, it can’t hurt to schedule regular checkups with your doctor to ensure a healthy system. A physical every year would do the trick, but when traveling abroad it’s also a good idea to make a visit before your departure. In fact, the recommended time is approximately two months in advance. Ensure you’re prepared both mentally and physically by taking this precaution. Ask your doctor if there is anything you should be aware of regarding the area you are traveling to, and if there are any supplements or vaccines they would recommend.
Subject Matter Experts in this area would be the WHO and CDC. The World Health Organization (WHO) compiles databases of medical information by country, health topics and publications (such as The World Health Report). In addition, check the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for information on vaccines. Their website also includes resources for travelers’ health which you can narrow by Destinations, Travel Notices and more. Use these two organizations’ websites to check the specific country you are visiting to get an overview of the current health situation for the area.
Ok so this sounds really basic, but simply entering the city or location you will be visiting into Maps will bring up a satellite view of the surrounding area. Is it clearly urban or rural? Are there stores and farmacias nearby or will these resources be a couple hours drive? Beyond this first step, it is important to research the area and know what kinds of necessities will be available for purchase. Not only will this save you room in your bag when trying to figure out how to pack, but it will save you some stress as well– full circle back to maintaining your well-being!
