We are proud to introduce the United Planet Global Health Fellowship – a new scholarship program for Boston Public School students looking to explore careers in the healthcare field. Sponsored in part by local corporations such as The Innovation Group and Cubist Pharmaceuticals, the fellowship program provides five Boston-area high school students a fully-funded volunteer Quest to Ecuador to work with local healthcare professionals and learn about global health issues affecting the international community. For many of the Fellows, the Quest will be their first time traveling abroad in this capacity.
Our increasingly global economy makes international experience almost essential, especially in the healthcare field. The five Fellows will not only observe healthcare professionals in Ecuador, but will explore the local community and culture, learn about local history, and live with local host families for a truly immersive experience.
Without further ado, meet the 2014 Global Health Fellows!
Cat N. Cat is a rising senior at Brighton High School. Born in Vietnam, she moved to the United States six years ago, where she is an honor roll student. As a Global Health Fellow, she hopes to not only volunteer, but to learn about the differences between healthcare systems around the world.
Giezy A. Giezy just finished her junior year at Excel High School, where she has won multiple academic awards. Giezy was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States in 2010. She is passionate about helping people and improving conditions in the Dominican Republic and around the world, especially increasing access to healthcare and helping those suffering from malnutrition.
Johanna M. Johanna just finished her sophomore year at West Roxbury High School, where she is a member of the basketball and debate teams. Johanna is interested in biology, especially the human body, and hopes to someday work toward prevention of diseases such as HIV and cancer.
Naomie B. Naomie just finished her junior year at Snowden International, where she is an honor student and a member of the track and field team. Her trip to Ecuador as a Global Health Fellow will be her first time traveling outside the United States. Naomie aspires to be a surgeon, and is excited to explore the healthcare system in Ecuador.
The fellowship doesn’t end in Ecuador. The Global Health Fellows will continue to learn from and share their insights after they’ve returned to Boston. Each fellow will give presentations about their Quest to their school and community, and act as mentors to next year’s Global Health Fellows. We are so excited to see this program become a jumping-off point for the next generation of global health leaders. Best of luck to Naomie, Johanna, Cat, and Giezy!
