Is Volunteering Abroad Right for Your Family?

December 22, 2014Elaina Druid

Before you decide to book your family vacation to Florida this year, did you ever consider the option of discovering a world outside your own by volunteering abroad?

Amy Pennybacker3There will be no time wasted waiting in long lines during a family adventure spent volunteering abroad. You and your family’s time will be spent immersing yourselves in a new culture while working alongside a community.

United Planet will provide everything you and your family need to create the journey of a lifetime. Your Quest will be a comprehensive and enriching learning experience that includes planning and support, safe travel and accommodations, language immersion, cultural activities, and learning excursions.

Children and Education Quests are a great option for families who are looking to volunteer abroad. Your children will have the opportunity to interact with children their own age from another country. Here are some great family volunteer opportunities to explore:

  1. Peru: Volunteers can work at an orphanage in Cusco, assisting the substitute mothers in taking care of the household, helping children with their homework and organizing workshops and recreational activities.
  2. Nepal: At an orphanage in Kathmandu, volunteers will assist the staff in looking after the children and tend to their basic needs. Volunteers can also help the older children with educational activities such as teaching basic English.
  3. Romania: Families work and live at a remote orphanage and community, tending to the needs of the children.

Catherine Pelto and Paige RylanderTake it from our Groups and Partnerships Manager, Laura Kastner: “Volunteering abroad is a great way to bring families together and to help younger family members gain a better understanding of the world in which they live with the support of their parents. For those who choose to take their families on such an adventure, they are able to use it as a teaching tool and bonding opportunity.”

With the New Year rapidly approaching, volunteering abroad would be a perfect way to recommit to grow and spend more time as a family.
