Introducing the 2015 United Planet Global Health Fellows

July 30, 2015United Planet

We are proud to continue the United Planet Global Health Fellowship, now in its second year. This program is designed for Boston Public School students who are looking to explore careers in the healthcare field.

We are excited to introduce the 2015 Global Health Fellows, five Boston-area high school students who will be traveling on a fully-funded volunteer Quest to Ecuador to work with local healthcare professionals. Partly sponsored by local organizations such as Cubist Pharmaceuticals, the Clough Center for Global Understanding, the Reebok Foundation, and the Innovation Group, the fellowship program provides the Fellows with international experience, which is almost essential in the increasingly global field of healthcare. They will also immerse in the local community and culture, live with host families, and learn about the history of the region.

2015 Global Health Fellows

Natasha T. just finished her sophomore year at the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers. Originally born in Venezuela, she is an active member of her community, having worked with the Hyde Square Task Force. She’s also a dedicated student, receiving an honorable mention for her academics and an award for achievement in writing. Natasha is looking forward to learning about health issues from an international perspective and exploring future global health career opportunities.

Esther S. also just finished her sophomore year at the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers. She received third place in her school’s Science Fair this year, and stays busy with activities that include the Student Success Job Program and the Girls Brigade. She is interested in exploring the connection between education and reducing teen pregnancy, particularly in countries with underdeveloped healthcare systems, and aspires to be a pediatrician or registered nurse in the future.

Ibrahim B. is a rising senior at Josiah Quincy Upper School, where he is an honor roll student. He is also a member of both the varsity soccer and basketball teams. His family is from Guinea, which partly inspired his passion for the medical field from a young age. He is interested in working in countries with limited medical resources, making this Fellowship a great opportunity for him to gain real world experience.

Harry D., a student at Boston Latin School, is also a rising senior. He has been the recipient of multiple academic and engaged citizenship awards. Additionally, he has extensive volunteer experience and he interned at Tufts Medical Center last summer where he gained familiarity in working in a clinical setting and assisted with several clinical quality improvement projects.

Julia S. is a rising senior at Boston Latin School as well. She was inducted to the National Honor Society this past winter, particularly notable considering that she also balances other commitments including tutoring, working on the Mayor’s Youth Council, and participating in both soccer and track. Her experience in the healthcare field includes working as a Nurse’s Office Praefect.

Once our five Global Health Fellows return, they’ll continue to learn from and share their insights. They’ll give presentations about their Quest to their schools and communities and be mentors for next year’s Global Health Fellows.

We love this program and the opportunities it provides for the next generation of global health leaders. Best of luck to Natasha, Esther, Ibrahim, Harry, and Julia!
