The 31st International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE) General Assembly took place in Hoi An, Vietnam from November 18th-23rd, 2019. The GA was attended by representatives from more than 35 National Committee partners around the world. Our International Program Manager, Elissa, had a chance to travel to Vietnam with the Federation. Here, she is sharing with us her take on the food, culture, and experience in Vietnam.
Xin chao (hello)!
I traveled for the International Cultural Youth Exchange bi-annual assembly and, am thrilled to share my experience with you.
Two weeks in Vietnam allowed me to see so much of the rich culture in both Hoi An (Central) and Hanoi (North ).
As a foodie, I had one goal for my meals and, that was to try some delicious Pho. But, traditional pho is made with chicken or beef (not too appetizing for my pescatarian lifestyle) so, instead, I ate everything else! From fried wontons, shrimp spring rolls, salmon made in a clay pot, and white roses to ginger tea and rice wine- I tried it all and, the consensus is delicious. My only regret is not having time for a cooking class.Something that stood out and, you’d have to be a hermit not to notice it, were the streets crowded with people, motorbikes, and cars. Yes, there are traffic laws. No, no one is following them–at least it seems. Three and four people pile onto motorbikes and squeeze between my taxi and city buses. It’s part thrilling to see but, the other half of me must look away to prevent being carsick. I didn’t ride on a motorbike and for safety, I wouldn’t recommend it. But, everyone seemed so comfortable doing so and, at least motorbikes emit less greenhouse gas!
Now, I wouldn’t be giving a full overview without addressing the peopleI had the pleasure to meet. Not only was everyone friendly, but also very willing to answer any questions I had. Like, a server at Era in the Old Town, Dale, who described the altar of the gods at most establishments’ doors and the significance of their blessings. And Ana Lee who not only created a beautiful traditional Ao Dai for me but also shared her insight into the amazing tailor based area that is Hoi An. I could, also, never forget Trinh whose husband I met while riding in his taxi. He shared with me Trinh’s card for her store in the Old Town and, after much confusion on finding it I was welcomed by the most positive woman. I was so touched to receive so much joy, kindness, and help with my trip.
I can’t wait to travel to the South next!
