Morton East High School Student Expresses How United Planet’s Virtual Classroom Exchange Program Changed Her Global Perspective

May 20, 2022United Planet

“United Planet’s Virtual Exchange Chapters Program unraveled my passion to tackle systemic racism among minority students in high schools.”—Julissa C., graduating Senior at J. Sterling Morton East High School

***

Recently, Sofia Gonzalez, an AP English teacher at J. Sterling Morton East High School in Cicero, Illinois, received a wonderful (and rare) letter of appreciation from a graduating Senior.

In this letter from Julissa C. she made a point of highlighting her experience participating in United Planet’s Virtual Classroom Chapters Exchange Program.

Sofia was so happy to see that Julissa included this experiential learning experience with her that she shared it with us.

Here is the portion of the letter that discusses the impact that the program had on her:

“I’m not sure how to recap my appreciation, so instead I’ll include a part I included in most, if not all, of my essays for college scholarships, etc.

In 11th grade, I participated in the United Planet’s Virtual Exchange Chapters Program. This unraveled my passion to tackle systemic racism among minority students in high schools.

My lack of knowledge about students my age and skin color who are robbed of accomplishing their dreams because of their background/zip code appalled me.

I want to advocate/educate in my future career and with students during college who utilize their voice for change, take charge, and guarantee hands-on experience.

In short, thank you for displaying, every single day, what an exemplary teacher who cares about her students’ well-being and success is. The opportunities you offered in class, such as the REHUGO/United Planet SDG Project helped me break free from my bubble and unlock my new passion.

I hope to follow on with these dreams and take with me what I learned from your inspiring work in the community.”—Julissa C., graduating Senior at J. Sterling Morton East High School
