The Republic of Costa Rica is located in Central America, just south of Nicaragua. The coast of this enticing paradise yields many treasures, quite literally since Costa Rica translates to English as “rich coast,” but also because it is overflowing with life. The country is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea which creates a large coastal territory. One of the reasons why these coasts are so lively is because of Costa Rica’s high concentration of biodiversity, which is in fact the largest in the world. Due to its abundant wildlife, Costa Rica is a major destination for eco-tourists. There is a vast array of flora and fauna, and it is thought to contain as much as 6% of the world’s plant and animals species alone! It is extraordinary that an area roughly the size of the combined U.S. states of Vermont and New Hampshire can contain so much life.
A lush paradise greets any traveler on the vivacious shores of Costa Rica. The country’s close proximity to the equator permits a tropical climate year-round. Costa Rica is also a potent destination for those seeking adventure. For any beach lover, Costa Rica holds some of the world’s most renowned beaches. Following suit with a tropical vibe, the island is littered with several active volcanoes that can be visited, within safety of course. Costa Rica is a paradise that runs on its own clock. “Certainly the tico way works in Costa Rica,” says Yi-Ju Chen, who participated in the Sea Turtle Project in Costa Rica for 2 weeks. When running on tico time, also known as “la hora tica”, leisure is valued over punctuality. Costa Rica is the perfect place for exploring the wonders of nature in a place where time runs differently.
Costa Rica is a great place to get immersed in the Spanish language. “My Quest in Costa Rica was one of the most horizon-expanding experiences of my life to date. On top of improving my Spanish-speaking skills, it also introduced me to a whole new culture and way of life,” says Meredith Blumberg, who participated in an Education Quest in Costa Rica for 12 weeks. Costa Rica is also over flowing with traditional food and customs. Costa Rica’s Gallo Pinto, a popular rice and beans dish served for breakfast, is great for all types of diets. Typical, well-rounded meals in Costa Rica consist of fresh vegetables and fruits, along with rice, beans, and various meats. Costa Rica is known for flavorful, yet simple cuisine. With something for everyone, you’ll never be let down when dinning around.
The inhabitants of Costa Rica are known for living a “pura vida,” or in English, a pure life, where the quality of life is highly valued. Along with enjoying life, Costa Rica as a nation prides itself on taking positive steps to maintain its thriving landscape through expansive green efforts. In fact, 25% of Costa Rica’s land is composed of protected parks and areas to ensure the vitality of the affluent nature and wildlife present throughout the country. With such monumental biodiversity it is integral to protect Costa Rica’s renowned environmental treasures.
Although Costa Rica is the model of economic stability in Central America, there are still social issues that need to be addressed. Opportunities are available to participate in the aiding of the Costa Rican economy as well. Volunteer Quests such as working with NGOs, centers for the elderly, orphans, and schools are available.
Eco-tourism and Wildlife Conservation Quest: Interested in working hands on in Costa Rica’s thriving ecosystem? Participate in environmental conservation projects throughout Costa Rica. Work with locals to preserve parks and promote sustainable systems to conserve Costa Rica’s flora, fauna, and water resources or assist in the conservation and rehabilitation of wildlife. Become one with the most diverse environment in the world. This Quest is a portal to developing skills in leadership and language, while participating in life changing experiences.
Sea Turtle Project Quest: The leatherback sea turtle population present on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica is rapidly diminishing. Sea turtles are now more then ever, faced with the threat of beach erosion and human poachers. Participating in the protection, maintenance, and construction of the hatcheries could help save these magnificent creatures lives. “it was truly incredible to touch the turtles and watch them lay eggs. The guides, once you got to know them, were such interesting people” emphasized Natalie Cutler who participated in the Sea Turtle Project for 3 weeks. Volunteers are welcome during the nesting season, running from the beginning of March to the end of December. This is an ideal Quest for those interested in the conservation of wildlife, every life counts.
Whether it’s working to preserve wildlife, exploring magnificent beaches, or getting lost among a unique culture, volunteering in Costa Rica provides each individual a distinct experience and unique memories. The wondrous culture and diverse landscapes are waiting to be explored. According to Badewa Fashote who participated in a 10 week Health Care Quest in Costa Rica, “I have found a new love for the Spanish language and I can’t wait to visit Costa Rica again for the second time! Being exposed to a different culture has given me a deeper appreciation for the diverse world I live in.”
